Ukraine is aware of the potential risks to its PURL program due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, as stated by Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to NATO, Aliona Hetmanchuk, in an exclusive interview on March 26.
Hetmanchuk highlighted that the situation in Iran raises concerns regarding the gradual depletion of critical air defense systems, particularly interceptor missiles for the Patriot systems. She noted that Ukraine currently receives approximately 75% of its Patriot interceptor missiles and about 90% of its other air defense systems through the PURL program, especially the PAC2 and PAC3 missiles.
She emphasized that the commitments made by the United States regarding missile supplies were fully met last month and expressed hope that similar deliveries, particularly of the PAC3 missiles, would continue this month.
Furthermore, Hetmanchuk clarified that there have been no indications that weapons designated for Ukraine under the PURL program might be redirected to the Middle East.
She also pointed out that the PURL program provides Ukraine with other crucial weaponry that supports its frontline operations and successful counterattacks. Some of these arms are received exclusively through PURL, making contributions from European and NATO partners vital and urgent. Currently, there are no reasons to believe that these contributions will not be made.
Earlier, The Washington Post reported, citing sources, that the Pentagon is considering redirecting military aid intended for Ukraine to the Middle East. This potential decision is linked to the ongoing conflict in Iran, which is exhausting stockpiles of essential munitions for U.S. armed forces.
According to three anonymous sources, the weaponry that could be redirected from Ukraine includes air defense interceptor missiles procured under the PURL program, which involves purchasing American weapons for the Ukrainian armed forces with funds from other NATO member states.
Ukraine's representative to NATO has raised alarms about the risks to its PURL program amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. The U.S. has assured continued support, but concerns remain about potential redirection of military aid.
