Ukraine Expands Military Contracts to Volunteers Over 60

Ukraine has introduced new military service contracts for volunteers aged 60 and older, allowing them to serve for one year. This initiative aims to enhance the military’s capabilities while providing opportunities for older citizens to contribute to national defense.

President Volodymyr Zelensky recently signed decree No. 108/2026, which updates the regulations governing military service. Key changes include the introduction of contracts for older volunteers, streamlined career advancement for military personnel, and additional protections against unwanted relocations.

According to military expert Ilya Abel, participation in this program is strictly voluntary and contingent upon a health assessment by the military medical commission. Candidates must demonstrate their fitness for service before signing the contract.

The roles available to these volunteers will primarily be non-combat positions, including soldier, sergeant, and, for those with appropriate training, officer roles. A six-month probation period will assess candidates’ suitability for their assigned duties.

During the selection process, preference will be given to individuals who meet specific criteria:

  • Those discharged from service after 2015.
  • Veterans with combat experience.
  • Professionals in high-demand specialties.
  • Individuals with relevant military experience and qualifications that do not require retraining.

For those interested in applying, it is crucial to note that the process begins directly with the military unit rather than recruitment centers. Abel emphasizes that neither recruitment centers nor territorial centers can directly mobilize these candidates. After an interview, the commander of the chosen unit will notify the recruitment center about the need for a medical examination for the candidate.

Regarding compensation, the pay structure will be uniform and based on the location of service, with no special conditions or reduced pay rates for this age group.

This policy change not only allows older citizens to engage in military service but also creates additional opportunities for career advancement within the armed forces, fostering collaboration between volunteers and younger service members.

Ukraine has launched a program allowing volunteers over 60 to serve in the military for one year, focusing on non-combat roles. This initiative aims to enhance military capabilities while providing older citizens a chance to contribute to national defense.
