What will take place in Belarus on January 26 can be called anything but democratic and transparent elections.
This was stated by the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heorhiy Tykhy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reports.
He commented on the early presidential “elections” in Belarus, scheduled for January 26. He stated that the voting did not meet the standards of democracy and transparency.
“Voting that I would like to call a presidential election, if there were grounds for it. For us, there is nothing unexpected in this action. And its results, in principle, are known in advance, I think, and you too,” Tykhy said.
According to him, the self-proclaimed leader of Belarus, Oleksandr Lukashenko, remains an ally and accomplice of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in the war against Ukraine.
He also noted that Belarus lacks the basic conditions for fair elections, and a large number of citizens living abroad are deprived of the right to vote due to political persecution.
According to the spokesman, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine supports the position of the EU, USA, Great Britain and Canada regarding the illegitimacy of the Belarusian elections.
“The Belarusian people deserve the right to choose power in truly democratic, free, competitive elections and to build their own future without Russia’s dictates, without its imperial encroachments and without Moscow’s aspirations,” Tykhi emphasized.
At the same time, the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also expressed his gratitude to the Belarusians who support the Ukrainian people in the fight against Russian aggression, in particular to those who participate in the war on the side of Ukraine.
“We believe that by doing so they also bring real democratic changes in their own country closer,” he concluded.
Earlier, the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus registered five candidates who will participate in the presidential elections on January 26, 2025. Oleksandr Lukashenka, Oleg Haidukevich, Serhiy Sirankov, Anna Kanapatska and Oleksandr Khizhnyak were included in the list.
In Belarus, there are no conditions for an honest and free expression of will, so the so-called presidential elections in 2025 will be another fiction, said Peter Stano, the spokesperson of the European Commission.
