President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he does not need intermediaries in communication with the elected president of the United States, Donald Trump.
The head of state said this during the meeting of the Congress of local and regional authorities under the President of Ukraine.
“Now is a period of transition in the United States. I communicate with President Trump, we had several meetings, conversations. I don’t need intermediaries in this. There are various politicians who use this as their PR,” Zelenskyy explained.
In this context, he mentioned Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
“I will not let him and people like him go. We need direct relations with the United States. We are a strong country, we showed it on the battlefield during all of Putin’s aggression. Does anyone in Europe have such a modern example? There is none. Does Orban have such an army? How will he put pressure on Putin? Anecdote? Smile? Let him leave it to himself,” said the President of Ukraine.
Active work is currently underway with Trump’s team, Zelensky noted.
“Today, more details are needed, my team works more with his team. This is still an acquaintance. He cannot answer many things in terms of his legal capacity until the inauguration of a new US president. Until that happened, we are working with the White House, with President Biden. They are now increasing the number of solutions, packages. It’s a shame they’re increasing it now, near the end of (Joe Biden’s White House) term,” he said.
The head of state also expressed hope that Trump’s team will support Ukraine and not stop this aid.
Also, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy once again criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for his attempts at “mediation”. The head of state emphasized that he has no leverage over the aggressor state.
It will be recalled that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that he offered Ukraine and the Russian Federation to make a Christmas truce and exchange prisoners, but President Zelenskyi “clearly refused and ruled it out.”
At the same time, Trump’s future national security adviser Mike Waltz said that he would be happy to see at least a temporary cessation of hostilities in Ukraine, similar to the “Christmas truce” proposed by Viktor Orban.
