Ukrainian forces have successfully neutralized relay stations used by Iranian-made Shahed drones operating from Belarus. These stations were reportedly instrumental in facilitating reconnaissance missions over Kyiv.
Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov confirmed the operation, stating, “We have managed to eliminate the Mesh network utilized by the Shaheds in the north, which has positively impacted the defense capabilities of Kyiv and central Ukraine.” This network was crucial for maintaining communication between the drones.
Military analyst Serhii “Flash” Biskrestnov provided further context, explaining that the Mesh network consists of radio modems that not only transmit signals but also act as relays and amplifiers. He noted, “In this setup, all Shaheds in the air are interconnected via radio. As a result, if several drones are shot down, communication remains intact, as it can be rerouted through other drones.” This resilience is contingent upon the presence of initial points that connect the control channels to Russian drone operators.
Typically, these points are situated on tall towers (70-90 meters) near the Ukrainian border, equipped with powerful antennas directed towards Ukrainian territory. Biskrestnov emphasized that Ukrainian radio intelligence can accurately pinpoint the locations of these signals.
He remarked, “The operation of such points from Russian and occupied territories was not surprising, but the functioning of these stations from Belarus came as a revelation. Several points were identified in Belarus, servicing Shaheds across various regions of Ukraine.”
According to Biskrestnov, one of these points extended its reach to Kyiv, enabling Russian reconnaissance drones to fly over the capital and relay data to their operators. Another point facilitated Shahed attacks on western Ukraine, specifically targeting the Kyiv-Kovel railway. He stated, “Of course, we did not remain passive while observing the management of Shaheds from Belarus.”
Ukrainian forces have disrupted a network of relay stations in Belarus that facilitated Iranian drone operations over Kyiv. This strategic move is expected to enhance Ukraine's defensive capabilities.
