Ukraine decided to close the embassy in Havana and lower the level of diplomatic relations with Cuba. The reason was the fact of Russia’s support in the war against Ukraine and the inaction of the Cuban authorities in response to the mass conscription of its citizens into the Russian army of occupation.
This was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sybiga.
Sybiga noted that Ukraine voted against the resolution of the UN General Assembly on the need to end the American blockade of Cuba, having serious reasons for doing so.
- Support for Russian aggression: the Cuban president wished Russian dictator Volodymyr Putin “success” in his aggressive war against Ukraine.
- Complicity in mercenaries: Ukraine’s vote against the resolution is directed against the inaction of the Cuban authorities in response to the mass conscription of Cuban citizens into the Russian army of occupation.
“Thousands of them signed contracts, replenishing the ranks of soldiers who take direct part in hostilities on Ukrainian soil,” the minister said.
Sybiga emphasized that “Havana’s reluctance to stop the mass involvement of its citizens in Russia’s war against Ukraine is complicity in aggression” and should be condemned. The minister added that the decision is not directed against the Cuban people, but Ukraine will always oppose such practice.
Earlier, Ukraine launched a sanctions process against Nicaragua due to the opening of a consulate in the annexed Crimea. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has protested against the illegal visit of the Nicaraguan Ambassador to the Russian Federation, Alba Asusena Torres, to the temporarily occupied Crimea, which was not agreed with Ukraine, to present Oleg Belavyentsev with a consular patent to the “honorary consul of Nicaragua in the Russian Federation with residence in Simferopol”.
