On May 8, Ukrainians celebrate “The Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II.” This state holiday was officially established by the Verkhovna Rada in 2023 by the Law on the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945.

From now on, May 8 is the only date when Ukraine honors the memory of the dead and victory over Nazism, and the day off will be introduced after the martial law.

The tradition of celebrating this date on May 8 has been gradually formed since the early 2000s, when public organizations began to honor the end of World War II on this day.

In 2014, this initiative was supported by the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory and the Ministry of Culture, and since 2015, on May 8, it was officially celebrated as Memorial and Reconciliation Day.

However, only in 2023 the Verkhovna Rada finally enshrined this date as a public holiday, and from now on May 9 in Ukraine celebrate Europe Day.

The symbol of memory of the Second World War in Ukraine since 2014 is red poppy. He became a sign of sorrow for all the victims of the war and a reminder of the tragedies that the war brought not only to the military but also to civilians.

The Ukrainian Institute of National Memory calls for the use of Mack of Memory during memorial events, as they do in many European countries.

The Second World War has become one of the largest tragedies for Ukraine. Ukrainian land was one of the main theaters of hostilities, a place of fierce battles and mass resistance. Millions of Ukrainians have fought weapons in different armies of the world, hundreds of thousands have acted underground and rebel movements.

The losses of Ukrainians in this war are about 8 million people, of whom five million are civil and three million are military.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated the compatriots on this day: “Happy memory and victory over Nazism in World War II!”.

We will remind, now only 11% of Ukrainians consider May 9 an important holiday. This attitude was influenced by the war and Russian propaganda.

We also reported that US President Donald Trump believes that the victory in the Second World War over Nazi Germany was mostly the merit of the US army. Thus, he diminished the role of European countries in the collapse of Hitler’s forces.
