Ukraine plans to start exporting biomethane to Europe in November 2024. This will be possible after the accumulation of sufficient stocks in warehouses and training of personnel.
Heorhiy Heletukha, chairman of the board of the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine, reported that there are currently 7 biomethane plants operating in Ukraine, which should be operational by the end of 2024.
Of these, two plants produce liquefied biomethane and do not require connection to the gas transmission system (GTS), and five will be connected to gas networks: one – to the Ukrainian GTS Operator, and four – to distribution networks. Two of these plants already have contracts for connection to distribution networks and are the most ready to start work.
Geletukha noted that according to the law that allows the export of biomethane, the gas must first be pumped into gas storage facilities for a month. Biomethane producers must learn to work with the OGTSU platform and understand the mechanisms of the gas market in order to export.
A total of 7 biomethane plants can produce 111 million cubic meters of biomethane per year. The most ready two of them can produce 6 million cubic meters per year. Forecasts for 2025 are still uncertain, as potential investors await the first results of biomethane exports.
