Ukraine appealed to its Western allies to increase pressure on Russia after Moscow used a new Oreshnyk missile in a massive strike on the country’s western regions.
According to Russia, the missile was used in a night attack on Kyiv and Lviv. The Ukrainian authorities stated that the use of these weapons near the borders of the EU and NATO is a serious threat to the security of all of Europe.
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that the new medium-range ballistic missile was used along with hundreds of other missiles and drones. According to Ukraine, as a result of the strikes in Kyiv, at least four people were killed, and more than two dozen were injured.
In Lviv, according to the city’s mayor, the attack damaged critical infrastructure facilities. The Ukrainian Air Force said the missile was traveling at a speed of about 13,000 km/h, and its exact type is still being analyzed.
Russia first used Oreshnyk in the fall of 2024, when the missile allegedly had training warheads and caused limited damage. Vladimir Putin claims that this missile is virtually uninterceptable and has a destructive power comparable to a nuclear, even a non-nuclear warhead. Western experts, however, are skeptical of these claims.
Moscow said the latest strike was in response to a Ukrainian drone attack on Putin’s residence, but both Ukraine and the US have rejected this version.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine emphasized that such strikes are irresponsible and require a strong reaction from the international community. The EU said that the use of the new missile is a signal for both Europe and the United States, and shows Russia’s reluctance to end the war.
