The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine expressed solidarity with the Georgian people. The government was urged to stop scaring its people with the mythical “Ukrainian scenario” while implementing the “Belarusian scenario” in practice.
This is stated in the commentary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the further aggravation of the domestic political situation in Georgia.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine strongly condemns the ongoing violations of human rights and the use of force against peaceful demonstrators in Georgia. Violence will not remain without consequences. The Georgian authorities must respect the fundamental right of citizens to peaceful protest. Moreover, the reason for the protests is the government’s decision to pause Georgia’s move to the EU, contrary to the European aspirations of the Georgian people,” the foreign policy department said.
The department added that it is surprising the efforts of the Georgian authorities to convince that the country’s European integration is ongoing, while its actions indicate that Georgia is turning towards the Russian Federation.
“At one time, the notorious Ukrainian politicians who tried to divert Ukraine from the path to the EU into the Russian yoke, also said that they were only “suspending” and not curtailing the European integration of our country. We resolutely reject persistent attempts by the Georgian authorities to involve Ukraine in internal political processes in their country. The Georgian government should stop scaring its people with the mythical “Ukrainian scenario” while implementing the “Belarusian scenario” in practice, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured that Ukraine was and remains committed to democratic transformation in Georgia and its further European and Euro-Atlantic integration, which corresponds to the interests of the Georgian people.
“In this context, we express our solidarity with our Georgian colleagues, diplomats, who publicly opposed the decision of the Georgian government to withdraw from the agenda of EU accession negotiations. We well understand the challenges faced by our Georgian colleagues, because in 2004 and 2014, at one of the most critical moments in Ukrainian history, the diplomatic service of Ukraine stood up for the democratic choice of the Ukrainian people, setting an example of professional and civic courage. We are convinced that European integration is the key to stability, prosperity and strengthening of democratic institutions in Georgia, and we seek a successful future for our peoples in the big European family. Our solidarity with the Georgian people remains steadfast,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine assured.
On the night of December 2, 37 people were taken to hospitals due to protests in Georgia.
Georgian Prime Minister Iraklii Kobakhidze announced the detention of persons who are allegedly “foreign instructors” during anti-government protests.
Earlier, in an emergency address, the President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, harshly criticized the actions of the authorities after the suspension of negotiations on the country’s accession to the European Union, calling it a constitutional coup.
For the third night in a row, in the big cities of Georgia, people once again protested against the authorities’ rejection of European integration. A protest action is taking place near the building of the Public Broadcaster in the capital, Tbilisi.
in the morning of November 30, Georgian law enforcement officers completed clearing Rustaveli Avenue of demonstrators who had gathered near the parliament building. Dispersal of the protest action there continued since the evening before.
Despite the brutal beating of Georgian oppositionists on the night of November 29, in the evening in several cities of the country, people again took to the streets, expressing their protest against the curtailment of European integration processes by the pro-Russian government.
