Ukraine and the USA announced the launch of three new projects in the field of small modular reactors (SRM).
This was announced by the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine with reference to the agreements reached by the two countries on the sidelines of the COP29 climate conference in Baku.
“The partnership will be implemented within the framework of the FIRST program (Basic infrastructure for the responsible use of small modular reactor technology),” the department noted.
The program provides for the implementation of three projects: the construction of a pilot plant for the production of pure hydrogen and ammonia (“Clean Fuel” project), the conversion of coal-fired power plants to MMR (“Phoenix” project) and the development of a road map for the decarbonization of the steel industry with the help of MMR (“Clean Steel” project ).
The Ministry of Energy added that the initiative is a strategic step to achieve global climate goals, regional energy security, economic growth and the prospects of Ukraine’s post-war leadership in the use of advanced nuclear technologies.
“Despite the fact that our country survived the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and now faces unprecedented challenges due to Russia’s occupation of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe – the Zaporizhzhia NPP, we continue to move forward, modernizing our current nuclear fleet and implementing our plans for construction of new nuclear generating capacities”, – stated the Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko.
The ministry noted that Ukraine joined the Declaration of the countries at COP28 and undertook to triple nuclear power by 2050. This involves supporting the development and construction of both large power units and small modular reactors for power generation and industrial applications.
“The projects will be implemented with the participation of leading energy companies and research institutions of Ukraine and the USA. MMR technology has significant advantages over traditional nuclear power plants due to modular production, easy transportation, increased safety and lower initial investments,” the Ministry of Energy explained.
The development of MMR technology in Ukraine is considered an important element of the post-war renewal of the country, which will contribute to energy security and decarbonization of the economy.
The FIRST program is designed to ensure the implementation of the highest standards of nuclear security and non-proliferation during the implementation of these projects.
Earlier it became known that Energoatom and the American company Holtec International will create in Ukraine the production of components for small modular reactors.
Energoatom noted that the participation of NAEC representatives at the stages of construction, testing and commissioning of MMR at the Palisades NPP site (USA) will enable the company to gain experience for the further implementation of this technology in Ukraine.
NAEK “Energoatom” planned the construction of a plant for the production of heat-separating assemblies near the city of Yuzhnoukrain, near which the Yuzhno-Ukrainian nuclear power plant is located.
Energoatom JSC believes that the Russians’ accusations against Ukraine of drone strikes on the ZNPP are aimed at trying to hide their own criminal intentions.
Ukraine is not involved in any armed provocations on the territory of the occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP, while the Russian Federation endangered the plant by simulating strikes and deploying troops and weapons there, said Andriy Yusov, the speaker of the GUR IOU.
