Ukraine and Great Britain signed a 100-year partnership agreement. The document will help build strong ties between the two countries in all areas: from trade, security and defense, to science and technology, education, culture, etc.

The Office of the President of Ukraine made public the content of the agreement on a one-year partnership.

The corresponding agreement was signed by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi and the Prime Minister of Great Britain Keir Starmer, who arrived in Kyiv on an unannounced visit the day before.

“Today is a truly historic day. Relations between Ukraine and Great Britain are closer than ever. We have reached a new level, this is more than strategic relations. We signed an agreement on a 100-year partnership,” Zelenskyi said.

The new agreement will promote the countries’ military cooperation in maritime security through a new framework to strengthen security in the Baltic, Black and Azov seas and deter ongoing Russian aggression. It will unite experts for the development of scientific and technological partnership in such areas as health care, agricultural technology, space and drones, educational projects.

In addition, a new British-developed scheme for tracking stolen grain from occupied Ukrainian territories will be launched.

The document also establishes the position of Great Britain as a priority partner of Ukraine in the energy sector, the strategy of extraction of critical minerals and the production of “green” steel.

“From working together on the world stage to overcoming barriers to trade and growing and developing cultural ties, the UK and Ukraine will stand together to renew, rebuild and reform for generations to come,” the British government said.

The British ministry also emphasized that the 100-year partnership is “an important step in maintaining the long-term security of Ukraine,” ensuring that “it will never again be vulnerable to the brutality inflicted on it by the Russian Federation.” The agreement commits Britain to stand side by side with a sovereign Ukraine for the next century.

The document states that NATO membership is the best guarantee of security for Ukraine, and the United Kingdom strongly supports the country’s irreversible path to NATO membership.

Therefore, the parties will develop areas whose importance goes far beyond the borders of war for Euro-Atlantic peace and stability, recognizing the important role of Ukraine in protecting Euro-Atlantic security and paying special attention to operational interoperability and its contribution as a future NATO ally.

Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction remain vital to success on this path, and together the parties can be leaders in many key sectors, championing shared values, open and inclusive societies and ensuring opportunities for all.

Ukraine, in turn, will continue to build its potential and capacity to prevent and counter corruption in the public and private sectors in accordance with its obligations under the agreement.

At the same time, the parties agreed on:

  • Strengthening of defense capabilities.
  • Strengthening security and reaching a consensus on Ukraine’s membership in NATO.
  • Building partnerships in the field of maritime security.
  • Strengthening of economic and trade cooperation.
  • Strengthening cooperation in the field of energy, climate and transition to clean energy.
  • Strengthening cooperation in the field of justice and prosecution.
  • Counteraction to foreign information manipulation and interference.
  • Strengthening positions as leaders in the field of science, technology and innovation.
  • Using the potential of socio-cultural ties.
  • Cooperation on migration issues.

It is worth noting that Great Britain provides comprehensive assistance to Ukraine and is one of the key allies in supporting the Ukrainian Defense Forces. London has already provided £12.8 billion in military and civilian aid to Kyiv during the war and trained tens of thousands of Ukrainian troops.

Ukraine recently received $1 billion from Great Britain and Japan.

And at the beginning of January, Ukraine and Great Britain held the fifth round of negotiations on concluding an agreement on the transition to a stronger and deeper partnership.
