Ukraine agreed with NATO to send NATO aircraft to Poland. Instead, Warsaw was supposed to hand over old MiG-29 fighters to Kyiv, but did not do so.
This was announced by President Volodymyr Zelenskyi at a press conference in Transcarpathia.
“We have good neighborly relations with Poland. There are various challenges, we constantly asked them to shoot down missiles heading towards Poland. There we have Stryi, gas storages, the country depends on this gas supply, it is our life,” he said.
Ukraine asked Poland to protect Stryi because it does not have the appropriate number of systems to protect the gas storage.
“What about the Poles? Are you being beaten? No. The Poles said they are ready to shoot down if they are not alone in this decision, if NATO supports them,” the president said.
Zelensky said that he had agreed with former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg that Poland would receive a police mission.
“These are NATO planes. We really wanted to get MiGs from Poland, but they could not give us because they did not have enough of their own. That’s why we agreed with NATO that they will assign them a police mission, like our Baltic friends,” he said.
“We agreed on this. And what after that? Did Poland give us planes? No. Found another reason? Yes. Have other countries united around Poland and said, yes, we are neighbors, we will shoot down both planes and air defense? No. When they decided not to shoot down these missiles with MiGs, we asked them to hand over the MiGs to us, they will be stationed somewhere in Western Ukraine and they will shoot them down,” Zelenskyi said.
Earlier, Poland announced that it would transfer the rest of its MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine when it “fills the gaps” created by the transfer of these aircraft to Kyiv.
Polish President Andrzej Duda confirmed Warsaw’s readiness to transfer the rest of its MiG-29 aircraft to Ukraine, but only on the condition that the allies ensure the safety of Polish airspace until Poland receives new aircraft.
