Today, May 15, Ukraine celebrates Embroidery Day – a holiday that has become a true symbol of national identity and unity of Ukrainians.
This holiday is not official, but every year it is gaining importance for both the residents of Ukraine and the representatives of the Diaspora, as well as foreigners who support Ukrainian culture.
Embroidery Day originates from the initiative of students of Yuriy Fedkovich Chernivtsi National University. It was in 2006 that the youth of the Faculty of History, Political Science and International Relations proposed to devote one day a year to a Ukrainian embroidered shirt.
The idea quickly went beyond the university, and in 2014 the holiday became popular not only among students, but also among the general population, covering the whole country and foreign communities.
On the third Thursday of May, it is no coincidence chosen for celebration – the organizers of the action insist that embroidery should be an organic part of everyday life, not just a festive attribute.
That is why embroidery day is celebrated on a weekday, emphasizing that traditions should live in every Ukrainian.
On this day, various competitions, flash mobs, photo shoots and fairs are held throughout Ukraine and beyond.
Particularly popular are online competitions such as “Best Embroidery” or “The best photo in embroidery”. Ukrainians are actively sharing the photos in national outfit on social networks, joining friends from different parts of the world.
We will remind, last year before the Day of Embroidery “UkrPoshta” released two new postal stamps with samples of Kharkiv and Crimean Tatar embroidery. The circulation of both is 800 thousand specimens.
We have already reported that a resident of the village of Drevina, Volyn region, Mykola Levchuk laid out plastic lids multicolored embroidery on the facade of his home.
