Today, June 16, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of St. Tikhon, Bishop of Amatunt.

He was born in a pious baker family in the ancient city of Amatunt in Cyprus. From early childhood, Tikhon was very kind – he often gave bread to the poor, helped the needy and showed mercy to all who needed support.

Thanks to good education, Tikhon first became a reader in the temple and later a presswoman. His wisdom and kindness did not go unnoticed, so at the end of the IV century he was elected bishop Amatunt.

In those days, many Gentiles still lived in Cyprus, and Tikhon actively preached Christian doctrine, built temples and converted people to faith. His activity became an example of sacrifice and sincere love for his neighbor.

The exact date of St. Tikhon’s death is unknown, but according to legend, he lived to a deep old age. His relics are stored in Cyprus, although part of the relic was transported to Constantinople.

Believers turn to the saint with prayers for peace in the family, harmony, relief in household chores and healing from illness. Especially in the people it is believed that it helps those who suffer from toothache.

June 16 is associated with a number of folk signs. If the day is sunny – summer promises to be dry. The large amount of dew in the morning heralds good weather, and thunder – long weather.

It is not recommended to work in the garden on this day – it is believed that labor will be in vain. It is also forbidden to make noise, talk loudly or outlined quarrels – it can “scare away” happiness and tranquility from home.

On June 12, Ukraine was a professional holiday of stock market workers. In Finland, Helsinki Day was celebrated, and in the Philippines – Independence Day.

In June 2025, the Orthodox celebrates one of the 12 main church holidays – the Day of the Holy Trinity, as well as the Christmas of St. John the Baptist and the Day of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.
