“I would say that certain communications are informal (with Trump’s team), they are still at different levels today. The issue here is that the team of the current president must clearly state their position regarding the end of the war,” Podolyak said.
He noted that the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, emphasized the need not only to end the war, but also to achieve its just end. Negotiations with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin are possible, but only if there is a clear understanding of what the parties are trying to achieve.
“If you sit down at the negotiating table and play on Putin’s terms, it’s one thing. And somehow it seems to me that it is unlikely that Trump will go down this path. Because it is an absolute nullification of his personal reputation. For this type of politician, which is Trump, personal reputation is important. And if you sit down at the negotiating table without a coercive tool with Russia, it makes no sense to expect any productivity from it,” the adviser said.
When future contacts with Russia begin to expand, it will become obvious that there is no point in negotiating with this country.
“I’m not talking about the Trump-Putin format, but at any level. Then it will be clear that there is “Patrushevshchyna” everywhere. It will be clear that there is no point in talking with the Russian Federation in principle. And that’s it. The only question is how long it takes for Trump to realize this. Either his reputation falls, or Russia’s reputation is completely destroyed. And then we see a completely different military support for Ukraine than it did before administration,” said Podolyak.
