The ecological system of Ukraine suffered serious losses as a result of Russia’s large-scale military aggression. Today, the damage caused to the natural environment is already estimated at 65 billion dollars.
This was announced by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.
During the Conference in Helsinki, devoted to the discussion of Clause 8 “Environmental security” of the peace formula initiated by the President of Ukraine, the Prime Minister noted that Russia’s war against Ukraine caused enormous ecological destruction and unprecedented environmental pollution.
Environmental damage from the Russians’ detonation of the Kakhovskaya HPP exceeds $1.5 billion — Shmyhal
“Currently, the damage caused to Ukrainian ecosystems reaches 65 billion dollars. A third of Ukrainian forests and 20% of the country’s nature conservation areas were affected by the war,” Shmyhal emphasized.
He also added that 35% of Europe’s biodiversity is under threat, part of which belongs to Ukraine.
“We have an important task ahead of us – to develop a common vision of how to protect nature and people’s lives. “Ukraine is ready to develop a joint vision and concrete steps, adhering to the principle: ‘the enemy must pay,'” the prime minister emphasized.
Shmyhal outlined several key tasks that require a joint strategy. In particular, it was about:
— monitoring, registration and reporting on all environmental consequences, damages and losses caused by the war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine;
— receiving valuable feedback and technical comments from Ukrainian partners;
— development of further steps to bring the Russian aggressor to justice for environmental crimes against Ukraine.
The Prime Minister also emphasized that environmental security is the basis for economic and social development, so solutions and resources must be found for the best protection and restoration of nature and ecology.
