Four sabers, dating from the 10th to 13th centuries, were discovered by American customs officials in a package that was being sent to the United States under the guise of a barbecue kit. Having found out that there are artifacts in the shipment, they were sent for further examination.
“Our experts turned to the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in Kyiv, handed over the photos, and it was established that these are cultural heritage items, treasures of the unique past of Ukraine,” said the US Deputy Secretary of National Security for Strategy, Policy and Planning, Robert Silvers.
At the handover ceremony, the Ukrainian side was represented by the Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications Mykola Tochytskyi.
In total, the US has identified 11 cultural properties that probably belong to Ukraine. The rest of the objects are currently in the process of identification by Ukrainian experts based on the provided photos.
Previously, during the control of international postal shipments, customs officials discovered five icons of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which were on their way from Kropyvnytskyi to the United States.
In the Chernivtsi region on the border with Romania, an attempt to export a collection of ancient coins and a book of the 18-20 centuries from Ukraine was prevented.
Law enforcement officers also blocked the smuggling channel through which coins made of precious metals were exported from Ukraine. An employee of Boryspil customs was involved in the scheme.
