At the beginning of 2025, the US Presidential Administration Donald Trump appealed to the Government of Ukraine to accept migrants deported from the United States, who are third countries.

Such an initiative looks unusual, given that Ukraine is in a state of full -scale war with Russia and is critical of Western support.
The documents studied by journalists do not indicate how many US people wanted to deport to Ukraine. It is only known that at the end of January 2025, a high -ranking American diplomat submitted an official proposal to Kiev.
Other countries received similar appeals, but Ukraine was among the first to whom such a request came.
The Ukrainian side did not respond immediately to this initiative. One of the Ukrainian diplomats informed the US Embassy that the government would decide on position and provide an official answer after its wording.
Subsequently, the unnamed Ukrainian diplomat stressed that Ukraine has “a solid experience of returning its citizens after their export by the United States”, but now the government faces the realities of “wartime”, which significantly complicates the admission of foreigners.
There are no signs that Kyiv has been considering the US proposal. According to two Ukrainian officials familiar with the situation, this issue did not reach the highest leadership of Ukraine.
One of them stressed that he did not know anything about any “political requirements” by Washington about the desire of Ukraine to accept deported migrants.
To date, Ukraine has not accepted any third country deported from the United States. The government did not take any steps in this direction, and the proposal itself seemed to be left without consideration.
At the same time, the US State Department has stated that “constant interaction with foreign governments” is key to counteracting illegal migration and protecting US borders, but the content of Ukraine’s proposal has refused to comment.
Recall that US President Donald Trump offers migrants to voluntarily leave the country with the opportunity to return in the future. However, not everyone will have the chances of returning.
