The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has officially announced the Secretariat of the Energy Community to terminate the Agreement to provide grants of the Energy Support Fund for a total amount of $ 75 million.
As stated in the statement of the energy community, this solution will significantly affect the available resources for the purchase of critically important equipment for the energy sector of Ukraine.
The USAID letter was received by the Secretariat on February 27, but the details and reasons for such a step are still unknown. In 2023, the agency concluded an agreement on grant worth $ 25 million, and in 2024 it was announced intention to increase funding by another $ 50 million.
The sudden termination of this program is jeopardizing Ukraine to restore damaged energy infrastructure, which is constantly being attacked by Russia.
The Ukrainian Energy Support Fund was created to help restore critical infrastructure damaged by Russian shelling. Due to the contributions of international donors, including governments, financial institutions and private companies, the Fund provided the purchase of equipment, spare parts, fuels and services for the repair of the power system.
The Fund is managed by the Secretariat of the Energy Community, which is also responsible for the transparency of the use of funds.
The cessation of USAID funding may be part of a broader US administration policy to reduce external assistance.
We will remind, according to the official note of a high -ranking official, employees of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) were ordered to destroy secret documents and personal affairs.
The US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also said the state officially closes 83% of USAID programs.
