US officials have told European colleagues that the European Union should participate in peace negotiations on war in Ukraine, as the aggressor country wants to lift sanctions as part of the agreement, Bloomberg reports, citing sources.

According to the agency, the United States has recently made it clear that priority is the cessation of hostilities in Ukraine, and then it will be possible to discuss security guarantees for Kiev.

Such a message can some extent reassure EU member states that fear that the US will try to conclude an agreement with the Russian Federation without the participation of European leaders. Until now, US President Donald Trump has largely excluded Europe from its conversations with Ukraine and Russia.

American officials have repeatedly declared the ally that the sanctions would remain valid until the agreement is concluded and that they are ready to take measures to increase pressure on the Kremlin if it does not cooperate.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned this issue in his speech to journalists at the G7 summit in Canada last week.

The European Union has imposed significant sanctions on the Russian Federation and individuals within Russia. Therefore, they will need to consult, they will need to be involved in this process and so on. So let’s not define in advance or we will not ahead the event, ”he said.

On March 13, Finance Minister Scott Bessent reported that the United States is ready to impose the most severe sanctions against Russia, if such a need arises, and this decision would be made without hesitation.

On March 12, Donald Trump stated that in the event of a violation of the ceasefire against Ukraine, Washington “can do very bad things” to Moscow in financial terms.

At the same time, Bloomberg, citing sources, wrote that Trump’s advisers were working on a plan for weakening sanctions against Russia, including reviewing restrictions on the sale of its oil.

On March 18, it became known that the US President instructed Bessent to review the sanctions regime against the Russian Federation and be ready to strengthen the restrictions.
