In the period from February 24, 2022 to August 31, 2024, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission documented 376 cases of war-related sexual violence in Ukraine. They concerned men, women, girls and boys.
“This form of gender-based violence covers people of all genders, and more than half of the documented cases concern men – mainly those who were tortured in captivity in the occupied territory or in the Russian Federation,” the report says.
The UN emphasized that conflict-related sexual violence is a violation of international law.
“Preventing this kind of violence and bringing the perpetrators to justice is a joint responsibility based on the obligations of states in the field of human rights. Victims of SNPK (conflict-related sexual violence – ed.) need comprehensive support for recovery, including support from society in general,” the UN said.
The organization reported that in Ukraine, against the background of the war, the campaign “16 days of activism against gender-based violence” is being launched.
“The campaign is bringing people together to speak out against gender-based violence – a topic that has been silenced for too long… The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign is a time to strengthen our solidarity with survivors of gender-based violence conflict,” the message says.
