Biography of a well -known figure

Igor Kalinets is one of the key figures of Ukrainian sixties, a poet, a public figure and a former political prisoner.

He was born in 1939 in Khodoriv, ​​Lviv region, studied at a philologist at Lviv University, worked in archives and libraries. His life is closely linked to the dissident movement and self -publishing: in 1972 he was arrested for “anti -Soviet activity” and sentenced to 6 years of camps and 3 years of exile.

He served his sentence in Perm camps with Vasyl Stus, Ivan Svitlychny and other Ukrainian intellectuals. Together with his wife, Irina Kalinets, he became a symbol of unbreakable dignity and struggle for Ukrainian identity in Soviet times.

The author of numerous poetic collections, Igor Kalinets no longer wrote poetry for adults, instead focused on children’s literature and cultural activity. It was awarded a number of prestigious awards, some of which have not deliberately accepted as a sign of protest against Russification.
