The decision was made after a state safety examination and it is of key importance for the stability of the Ukrainian energy system. The official decision was made on December 25 based on the results of the state examination of nuclear and radiation safety. The inspection confirmed that the power unit can operate safely for the next decade. The head of the State Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority, Oleg Korikov, handed over the authorization documents to Pavel Kovtonyuk, acting head of the board of Energoatom.
Energoatom emphasizes that this decision is critically important for the energy stability of the country, especially in the conditions of war and constant attacks on the energy infrastructure. “This is an important element of Energoatom’s long-term strategy for the preservation and development of nuclear power generation in Ukraine,” the company’s head noted.
According to him, Ukrainian nuclear workers once again proved their ability to work according to the highest safety standards, and the result became possible thanks to the coordinated work of the station’s staff and the company’s specialists.
The head of the State Atomic Energy Regulatory Commission, Oleg Korikov, emphasized that not only technical conclusions were taken into account when making the decision, but also the results of public discussions and meetings of the Department’s Board. “The Licensing Commission has confirmed the ability to safely operate power unit No. 2 of the VP PAES within the next decade,” he said.
General Director of the Southern Ukrainian NPP Vyacheslav Stoyanov added that the preparation for licensing was carried out taking into account previous experience. This made it possible to avoid a long stoppage of the unit and preserve the amount of electricity production, which is now critically important for the country.
