The second power unit of the Khmelnytsky NPP has been unable to operate at its design capacity for the third year in a row due to serious damage to the turbine equipment.
The press service of NAEK “Energoatom” confirmed that it is a defect in a high-pressure cylinder that occurred back in 2022.
It was then, during the start-up tests after planned and preventive maintenance, that the destruction of the working blades of the fifth stage of the CVT occurred. After the incident, the power unit was put into operation with restrictions, but they did not stop it completely.
According to “Energoatom”, despite the damage, the power unit is capable of producing up to 900 MW of electricity. This is 100 MW less than the nominal capacity laid down in the project.
The company emphasizes that thanks to technical measures, the station works stably and safely, and the loss of power is not as significant as some media previously reported. At the same time, “Energoatom” admits that the work with capacity limitation has actually been going on for the third year already.
The company does not explain in detail the reasons why it was not possible to completely update the key components of the turbine during this time. It is only reported that “Energoatom” is currently implementing measures to purchase a new modernized high-pressure cylinder rotor.
After the installation of this equipment, it is planned not only to return the nominal capacity of the power unit, but also to increase it by another 40 MW, up to 1040 MW. In this way, the second power unit of Khao NPP can become more powerful than was foreseen by the initial project.
We will remind you that in 2022, Energoatom spent UAH 210 million on purchases for the occupied ZNPP.
Also, NAEC “Energoatom” reported that the recent corruption scandal did not affect the production plans and safety of nuclear plants.
