According to the investigation, the gang systematically demanded money from entrepreneurs, covering up fictional debts. In case of refusal, the criminals threatened physical violence over the victims and their families.
In particular, the demanding of $ 800,000 from family business owners in the Carpathian region is documented. In another episode, the bandits tried to take savings from the Armed Forces serviceman, promising to “deceive” with his loved ones and destroy the property.
Four criminal authorities were coordinated by the group, who called themselves “watchful” in several cities of Ivano-Frankivsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions. One of them was detained on the border while trying to escape to the EU.
Within the special operation, the security forces conducted 28 searches in Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Odessa, Zhytomyr, Kirovograd, Transcarpathian, Ivano-Frankivsk and Khmelnitsky regions. Almost 1.5 million UAH was seized in different currencies, seven premium cars, weapons, information carriers and “black accounting”.
The detainees were notified of suspicion under Part 4 of Art. 189 of the Criminal Code (demand in martial law). Additionally, the issue of incrimination of Art. 255-1 and 255-3 of the Criminal Code regarding criminal influence.
All suspects are in custody. They face up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
