Polish historian Lukash Adamskyi stated that during the Volyn tragedy Poles acted mainly in a state of affect, responding to the actions of the Ukrainian insurgent army, which was the first to start ethnic cleansing.
He told about this in an interview with Glavkom.
Adamski emphasized that Polish historians are unanimous in their assessment of the events, although there are differences regarding the number of victims and approaches to the current dialogue with Ukraine. According to him, the UPA under the leadership of Dmytro Klyachkivskyi and Roman Shukhevych planned the “cleansing” of Volhynia from the Polish population, and the Polish contractions were a reaction to this and were not aimed at exterminating Ukrainians.
The historian emphasized that the Polish side did not seek ethnic cleansing and did not plan to destroy all Ukrainians on the territory of Poland at that time. He also criticized the claims of “mutual guilt” on both sides, stressing that the Poles were only defending themselves.
Adamsky recognizes the merits of the UPA in the fight against the Soviet regime, but emphasizes that it was she who became the organizer of ethnic cleansing, including Ukrainians who did not share her ideology.
