In Ukraine, it is accustomed that the holiday of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin is on October 14, but it is not right now. It is celebrated on October 1 on the new church calendar of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, and some are now confused when it is really cover.

From September 1, 2023, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (PCU), as well as the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), switched to the Novoyan Calendar, the decision was almost unanimously approved at the CCU Local Cathedral.

Thus, the discrepancy between the old Julian calendar and the astronomical time has reached 13 days, and church dates are increasingly lagging behind the real solar cycle over time. Now all non -transitional holidays (with fixed dates) are celebrated 13 days earlier than it was in the old style.

On October 1, the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated on October 1. In the church calendar, this day is called “the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the dream of Mary.”

For many Ukrainians, the Intercession is of particular importance, because it was celebrated in the XII century. The Cossacks considered the Virgin as their deputy and patron, and the main churches in Sich were consecrated in her honor.

Many believers are still guided by the usual old calendar, so on October 14 it is associated with the Intercession, but in a new style it is no longer a religious holiday.

We will remind, on September 14 in Ukraine annually celebrates the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy and Living Cross of the Lord, which is one of the twelve greatest holidays in the Christian tradition. It is a feast dedicated to the Cross, where Jesus Christ was crucified, and embodies His exaltation from the earth after finding. The second name of the holiday is “Crusader”.
