After the start of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, Ukraine returned 3,767 people, including 168 civilians, from Russian captivity.

Dmytro Lubinets, the Verkhovna Rada commissioner for human rights, told about this, Suspilne reports.

“As of now, together with the Coordination Headquarters and other bodies with which we work, we managed to return 3,767 heroes and heroines from Russian captivity,” he said.

The Ombudsman clarified that among the 3,767 prisoners, 168 citizens were returned, the rest were prisoners of war.

At the same time, Lubinets emphasized that the prisoners of war were returned only through the exchange procedure. According to him, today “tens of thousands of Ukrainian citizens are in Russian captivity”, according to official data.

Russia and Ukraine conducted only three other prisoner of war exchanges between January 1 and August 6, 2024, involving approximately 405 Ukrainian prisoners of war and 423 Russian prisoners of war.

On September 14, Ukraine conducted a new exchange of prisoners. 103 soldiers returned.
