“The negative trend is obvious, but the ratings are not the main thing now”: political scientist Fesenko on the drop in the level of trust in Zelensky

Currently, there is an obvious negative trend regarding the level of support and trust for the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi, but this is not the main thing in the current situation. Currently, there is an obvious negative trend regarding the level of support and trust for the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi, but this is not the main thing in the current situation. In this way, political scientist Volodymyr Fesenko commented on a new study by KMIS regarding the ratings of the head of state.

In a comment to the UA.News publication, the political expert said that the trends of the decrease in the trust rating of the president have been manifested since the fall of 2023 and are “obvious.” This is due to the prolongation of the war, the complication of the military situation and internal tension.

“The socio-economic situation has become more complicated and contradictory, the standard of living is falling. This is inevitable in the conditions of war. But not only Zelensky’s rating is declining. The rating of all state institutions without exception is downgraded. Apart from the Armed Forces, although there are nuances there too, because one thing is an abstract attitude to the Armed Forces, and another to, for example, the TCC. There is a problem of corruption, it annoys many and it certainly also affects the attitude towards the president and state institutions: the government, the Verkhovna Rada, law enforcement officers and so on. This is a natural story,” says Fesenko.

However, the political scientist considers it incorrect to compare sociologists with 2019. We will remind you that at the end of the year, the ratings of trust in the Ukrainian leader were 80%, now – 52%. The number of those who do not trust the head of state has increased to 39% – immediately by 9 percent.

“We should not compare here with 2019. When there is a victory in the elections, it is another matter, it is the ratings of the winner, any sociologist will tell you that. Such ratings, which Zelensky had then, are an anomaly. No one ever had them. And the ratings were even higher at the beginning of the war, in 2022. The highest trust ratings for any politician in the history of Ukraine were Zelensky’s ratings in 2022, associated with the war, patriotic surge and consolidation around the state and the president as its head. Therefore, these were abnormal ratings. And if you compare the current ratings of Zelensky with the ratings before the war, they are generally significantly higher than they were then,” Fesenko notes.

The expert says that there are obvious negative trends. However, about half of Ukrainians still trust the head of state. And for our country, this is a very high level.

“Ukrainians usually do not trust statesmen and politicians. The current situation is natural and reflects the complex and contradictory conditions of the war and the internal situation. On the other hand, about half maintain trust, and this is also a high indicator. This preserves political stability and demonstrates Zelensky’s legitimacy. Conclusion: people appreciate Zelensky, this is personal trust in him, but many have critical – I emphasize, critical – remarks,” Fesenko emphasizes.

The political scientist predicts the further dynamics of the ratings of the head of state. If the situation at the front and inside the country becomes more positive, the level of trust will also increase. And vice versa.

“The main thing now is to think about the fate of the state, not about ratings. To think about the fact that it is necessary to stop the enemy and enter into negotiations on the end of the war from a favorable position”, Volodymyr Fesenko summarized.
