The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine named Russia’s decision to withdraw from the arbitration process initiated in connection with the capture of three Ukrainian ships and sailors in the Kerch Strait in 2018 an attempt to avoid responsibility.
This is stated in a comment by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
On August 21, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine received a letter from the arbitration tribunal in the case of the agent of the Russian Federation on the formal withdrawal from the case and the recognition of all future decisions of the tribunal is void.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine considers such behavior of the Russian Federation as another attempt to avoid international legal liability for violation of the rules and principles of international law, in particular the UN Convention on the Sea Law,” the Foreign Ministry said.
Understanding the inevitability of liability for the illegal seizure of 24 Ukrainian servicemen on November 25, 2018 near the Kerch Strait and their maintenance for 9 months in Russian prisons, the Russian side has hurriedly declared withdrawal from the proceedings at its final stage, said in the department.
“At the same time, we emphasize that the formal exit of the Russian Federation does not mean the termination of the proceedings. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine will continue to present the position of Ukraine in this case. Justice for all victims and victims of numerous violations of international law and compensation for harm remains our priority, ”the Foreign Ministry said.
“Moscow can deny its involvement as much as you want, to declare the decisions of international courts or lie in the media, to try to translate guilt into someone else, but justice and punishment are inevitable,” the comment reads.
In April 2019, Ukraine launched international arbitration against the Russian Federation on the illegal seizure of three Ukrainian naval ships and 24 members of their crews.
The Hague began a hearing in the arbitration tribunal on the jurisdiction in Ukraine against Russia on the capture of three Ukrainian ships “Nikopol”, “Berdyansk” and “Yana-Kapu” and 24 Ukrainian sailors in November 2018.
Ukraine at the hearing of the Arbitration Court in the Hague in the case of seizure of Ukrainian sailors and ships in 2018 criticized the statements of the Russian Federation and accused the aggressor of neglect of international maritime law.
