The Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied information published in the media that Ukraine could make its own nuclear bomb if the US cuts military aid.
This was announced by the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Heorhiy Tykhy.
“Ukraine is committed to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons; we do not possess, develop, or intend to acquire nuclear weapons. “Ukraine closely cooperates with the IAEA and is fully transparent in its monitoring, which excludes the use of nuclear materials for military purposes,” the message reads.
Earlier, the Times publication, referring to a supposedly reportable memo prepared for the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, reported that Ukraine could quickly create a basic plutonium device using a technology similar to the Tovstun bomb dropped by the Americans on Nagasaki in 1945.
The Times also wrote that Kyiv, not having time to build and launch large capacities for uranium enrichment, would have to use plutonium extracted from spent fuel rods that were previously used in nuclear reactors at nuclear power plants.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, said that in a conversation with the currently elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, he discussed the need for Ukraine to join NATO, while mentioning Kyiv’s renunciation of nuclear weapons.
The German publication Bild, citing an unnamed Ukrainian official, wrote that Ukraine has the material and knowledge to create nuclear weapons: “We have the material, we have the knowledge. If there is an indication, it will take us only a few weeks to build the first bomb.”
Later, Zelensky himself denied that Ukraine was preparing to create nuclear weapons.
It will be recalled that during a meeting with Donald Trump, the US presidential candidate from the Republican Party, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told him that Ukraine can be protected either by nuclear weapons or by NATO.
Subsequently, Zelensky clarified that Ukraine does not plan to restore its nuclear arsenal, and the relevant rumors are false.
