Serhii Tyshchenko, a fighter of the 30th separate mechanized brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, spent 471 days continuously in one combat position in Donetsk region.
In an interview with tsn.ua, he talked about the harsh conditions of trench warfare and how the fighters survived under constant shelling.
According to him, at the beginning, the position had ventilation, but later, due to shelling, the entrance and the only window had to be covered with sacks. To provide water, the fighters even dug their own well inside the trench. Serhiy admitted that he himself does not understand how they were able to endure so long in such conditions.
“Already after the first assault, we realized that it was necessary to cover up, to lay down sacks. It was impossible to get out so quickly. For example, if you have to leave immediately because the assault is coming, it didn’t work out that way. It took some time for us to disassemble these bags. If we don’t barricade the exit with bags, the FPVs will simply blow it up and fly straight to us. In other words, it was a kind of security and the need to invest in bags,” says Serhiy.
He says that the soldiers at the position did not have enough water. There was no way to go after it, and when it was dropped from the drones, it crashed. Then the fighters decided to dig a well inside the trench. Before that, you had to drink water from the river:
“They dropped a little. For some time it happened that they went to other positions, where they collected water from the river. So. That is, they drew water from the river and drank it. We had filters, dropped filters that could be filtered through. Saw There were no special complications. Although you yourself drink and think, this will begin. When not That is, for some time they went there for water. Then, once again, such an opportunity ceased. So that you don’t sit without water at all. But what was in very small quantities – literally for a day or two.”
Serhiy says that in order to reach the water, he had to dig at least three meters.
“The fact is that the one who dug was persistent. This was our brother, nicknamed Balu. He began to dig. Accordingly, everyone was engaged. He directly dug the well itself. He braced himself and dug to the last. I didn’t believe. Of course, when the water appeared, no one filtered it for the first time. It was as muddy as it was drunk… Well, yes, there was a little bit of joy,” the soldier says.
