On December 4, at the plenary meeting of the 5th session of the Kyiv City Council, the deputies decided by a majority of votes to rename 10 city objects, the names of which were associated with the aggressor country.
This was reported by the press service of the Kyiv City Council.
As the deputy of the Kyiv City Council, the head of the permanent commission on culture, tourism and public communications Viktoriya Mukha noted, the process of de-Russification of city objects and assignment of new names to streets and alleys continues.
“Derussification is not about replacing nameplates, but about regaining our voice and memory. For decades, Russia imposed foreign names in order to blur our identity. Today, 10 more city objects were renamed. We are removing colonial influence, depriving the aggressor of a symbolic presence in the capital, and asserting our Ukrainian space of freedom. In the midst of the Russian-Ukrainian war, this kind of work is part of our resistance. Thank you to the citizens of Kyiv, experts and all the communities that supported these decisions. Together we are forming an urban space that speaks in Ukrainian terms and works for our Victory,” Viktoria Mukha emphasized.
As noted, the following city objects have been renamed:
- Holosiivskyi district: Levitana Street – Lukretska Street;
- Obolonsky district: Marshala Rokossovsky Avenue – Dmytro Pavlychka Avenue;
- Pechersk district: part of Lavrska Street, from Slava Square to Volunteer Battalions Street, was renamed in honor of Hetman Ivan Mazepa, the other part of the street, from Dobrovolchih Battalions Street to Navodnytska Square, returned to its historical name – Novonavodnytska Street;
- Darnytskyi district: Suvorova Street – Lyudmyla Foi Street; Volgo-Donska Street – Pavla Petrichenka Street;
- Dniprovsky district: Suleyman Stalsky Street – Ihor Yukhnovsky Street; Makarenko Lane – Sofia Okunevska Lane; Makarenko Street – Sheikh Mansur Battalion Street;
- Sviatoshynskyi district: Dunaevskyi lane – Tsundarivskyi lane; Dunaevskogo Street – Tsundarivska Street.
The Kyiv City Council renamed almost 40 objects in the city – a list.
