The International Monetary Fund worsened the Ukrainian population forecast to 33.9 million in 2030.
About it reports the forecast of the IMF World Economic Outlook (April 2025).
According to the IMF, the population of Ukraine in 2021 was 41.0 million. In 2022 it decreased to 34.5 million people, in 2023 – to 34.0 million people, in 2024 – up to 33.3 million.
The IMF predicts the following population:
- 2025 – 32.9 million people (forecast for October last year – 33.0 million people)
- 2026 – 33.4 million people (October forecast – 34.2 million people)
- 2027 – 34.0 million people (October forecast – 34.5 million people)
- 2028 – 34.0 million people (October forecast – 34.5 million people)
- 2029 – 34.0 million people (October forecast – 34.5 million people)
- 2030 – 33.9 million people.
The forecast corresponds to the IMF’s basic scenario, according to which Russia’s war against Ukraine will end at the end of 2025 (which will lead to a partial return of refugees).
And as the results of the UN Refugee Agency’s research show, most Ukrainian refugees and internally displaced persons (65 and 72%) want to return to their permanent residence.
Almost half (47%) of all Ukrainian refugees who live in Norway say they will not return to Ukraine, even if the war is over, the results of the survey testify.
