By holding the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin seeks to show the US and its allies that he has not become an outcast.
The Kremlin expects representatives of more than 30 countries to come to the summit, writes Bloomberg.
The authors of the publication emphasize that against the background of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine and growing war fatigue among some of Kyiv’s allies, Moscow is using the opportunity to show Putin as a person who opposes the West.
It is also noted that the BRICS are divided on efforts to reduce dependence on the dollar, with countries such as India rejecting efforts to promote the yuan. The report to the summit of the Russian Federation, which wants to achieve de-dollarization of the payment system, indicates possible changes in cross-border payments between the BRICS countries, but clarifies that these are proposals for discussion. However, unlike Russia, other countries do not have the same incentives to abandon the dollar system.
There is also no unity in the organization regarding expansion. India and some other countries fear the transformation of the group into an anti-American association dominated by the Russian Federation and China.
“Countries from Malaysia and Thailand to Nicaragua and NATO member Turkey are eager to join the BRICS, although the Russian summit is unlikely to reach an agreement on expansion,” the article says.
According to experts, the BRICS expansion is a sign that the global balance of power is changing. Its influence is also growing — the association’s members account for 26% of the world economy and 45% of the world’s population. And the presence of foreign leaders at the summit indicates the willingness of many to continue meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, despite the US and its allies. And the desire of many countries to join the BRICS testifies to the growing need for international relations independent of the West.
The BRICS summit will be held from October 22 to 24. According to propagandists, about 20,000 guests will come to Kazan, including more than 20 heads of state. Among them are Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The alliance currently has 9 members, but more than 40 countries have expressed interest in joining, and 15 countries have applied for membership.
The Kremlin also announced talks between UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and Putin. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine criticized the upcoming visit of the UN Secretary General to the BRICS summit in the Russian Federation.
