After enemy fire, the most important thing is to keep calm and act safely. If the home is damaged, assess the situation immediately, be aware of your location, and attempt to evacuate only when it is safe to do so. In case of being trapped by debris or rubble, it is important to signal to the rescuers and not expose yourself to new danger, informs National Police of Ukraine.

When a missile or an unmanned aerial vehicle arrives and a building is damaged, the first minutes after that can be decisive for your life and the lives of those around you. To begin with, don’t panic – reaction and a cold mind help you survive, and emergency services are already on the way to the scene. If you stayed inside after the impact, first assess the situation around you. If there is no visible damage and you can move safely, leave the premises as soon as possible and go to an open safe area, away from damaged structures, extinguished debris and possible further impacts.

In the event that the premises are seriously damaged or the exit is blocked, it is worth staying in place and giving a signal to rescuers – by voice, knocking on pipes or metal structures, the light of a flashlight or a phone: this will help find you faster during the search. If you are trapped by debris or rubble, do not try to remove the pile of debris yourself – this can cause another collapse and make the situation even more difficult. Instead, sound the alarm, call 101 or another emergency number if there is a connection, and wait for the emergency services to hear and get to you.

Remember: rescuers often have “moments of silence” during operations, when they stop heavy equipment and listen for possible signals from victims – at these moments, your active communication can be crucial. If the shelling has caused fire or smoke, try to keep a low body position, cover your mouth with a cloth (preferably wet) and move towards the exit only when the risks have completely disappeared, or move to safe corners of the room (away from windows and external walls) if immediate exit is not possible.

And finally, one of the ways to reduce the risks even before the impact is to prepare an “anxiety suitcase” in advance: a first aid kit, water, flashlight, power bank and documents that should be at hand so that in the event of an alarm or shelling you can react quickly without wasting precious minutes.
