President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that Russia is facing serious financial problems and this could make the Kremlin think about a pause in the war. He said this during a conversation with journalists. According to him, the budget deficit of the Russian Federation already reaches tens of billions of dollars and may be much larger than official figures show. Ukraine closely monitors the economic situation in Russia and believes that it directly affects the Kremlin’s ability to continue the war.
According to the head of state, Ukraine carefully analyzes the economic indicators of Russia, in particular the data of their Central Bank. Zelensky noted that even official figures show a significant deficit, but the real situation could be even worse. “The “Russians” have less money. We see that there is a report of their Central Bank – more than 80 billion dollars of deficit by 2025. We note that it is in the reports, but in reality it is more than 100 billion,” the president said.
He explained that the Russian authorities are trying to partially hide the real scale of the problems by postponing part of the payments to next year. Thus, the reporting shows a smaller deficit than it actually is. “It happens like this: you calculate a certain minus, you want to reduce the amount, you postpone payments to the next year. And at the end of the year, you record 83, but in reality it is 83 plus 19,” Zelenskyi explained.
According to him, this situation means that Russia’s financial resources are gradually decreasing. This applies not only to the general budget, but also to the ability to finance the war, maintain the army, produce weapons and compensate for the loss of equipment and personnel.
The president believes that the growing deficit may force the Kremlin to reconsider its plans and think about a temporary suspension of hostilities. “So I think they need a break. I think that Putin is thinking about a pause. We believe that they will have an even bigger deficit this year,” he said. Zelensky emphasized that the war requires huge costs, and Russia is forced to spend a significant part of its budget precisely on military needs. It is about the production of missiles, equipment, payment to the military, payments to the families of the dead and support for the defense industry.
At the same time, Russia’s economy is under constant pressure from sanctions, trade restrictions, reduced energy revenues, and the need to use up reserves. All this is gradually undermining the country’s financial stability. The President emphasized that Ukraine closely monitors these processes, as they directly affect the course of the war. According to him, Russia’s financial condition is one of the key factors that determines its ability to continue aggression.
At the same time, Zelenskyi did not make unambiguous predictions about the Kremlin’s possible decisions, but made it clear that economic pressure on Russia is growing and this may affect its further actions.
Also, Russia may lose up to 120,000 soldiers in a few months.
The US is again proposing an energy truce.
