Already today, January 20, the elected president of the United States, Donald Trump, will take office. At the same time, the fate of Ukraine hangs in the balance.

Kyiv Independent writes about it.

According to reporters, while some potential details of Trump’s future peace proposals have already leaked to the media, the overall plan still remains unclear to the general public. Since winning the presidential election in November, Trump and his team have been sending “mixed signals” about whether their potential peace proposals would be favorable to Ukraine.

However, judging by public statements, both Trump and his team realized the complexity of the conflict and revised the “schedule” for reaching a peace agreement. Earlier, the Republican said about 24 hours, but now he plans in 3-6 months.

“Over the last month and a half, they realized that the contradictions between Ukraine and Russia are quite deep and complex. This problem cannot be solved quickly or simply. They adjust their approaches and decide how to move forward,” says political scientist Volodymyr Fesenko.

Jenny Mathers, a professor of international politics at Britain’s Aberystwyth University, said that “Trump wants to end the war.” Therefore, bold and decisive actions should be expected.

“But will these bold actions benefit Russia or Ukraine? There are signs pointing both ways. Trump clearly admires Putin and finds his statements convincing. But Trump also wants to be seen as strong in his own right, so he may react negatively to any suggestion that he is acting as Putin’s pawn,” Mathers says.

Some statements made recently by Trump and his allies seem to indicate the achievement of a peace agreement from a position of strength, the newspaper writes.

“I want to reach an agreement, and the only way to reach an agreement is to not leave Ukraine,” Trump said in an interview with Time magazine published on December 12. And Western mass media report that support for Kyiv will not stop even after January 20.

Earlier we wrote that if Trump wants to end the war, he must first strengthen Ukraine.
