September 14 in Ukraine annually celebrates the Exaltation of the Holy and Living Cross of the Lord, which is one of the twelve greatest holidays in the Christian tradition. It is a feast dedicated to the Cross, where Jesus Christ was crucified, and embodies His exaltation from the earth after finding. The second name of the holiday is “Crusader”.
Orthodox believers celebrate this day, referring to the events that took place in 326. It was then that Queen Elena, who went in search of Christian shrines, found a cross on which Jesus was crucified, and his coffin, that is, the cave where he was buried and then resurrected.
The Cross was built by Macarius – the Patriarch of Jerusalem, so that everyone can see the shrine and touch it. Emperor Constantine – the son of Queen Helen – built the temple of the Holy Sepulcher (the Ascension of Christ).

On September 13, the temple was consecrated, and 14 – founded the feast of the Exaltation of the Lord. That is why annually the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross of the Lord is celebrated on this day.
The main tradition of Exaltation is to visit the temple or churches, listen to the Divine Liturgy. On this day, they prayed for the healing of loved ones, for the rich harvest next year, asked for getting rid of sins. It was believed that prayers on this day have a special power. If this day is genuinely prayed or asked for anything, it will definitely be done.
The Cross symbolizes divine protection, so in ancient times, one who wanted to protect his home and his loved ones, on September 14, painted a cross on the door of his home. This tradition exists in our time.
For the peasants, this day was considered the final end of Babi Summer and the onset of autumn. By this point, all cases concerning agriculture must be completed.
After a campaign to church, believers sprinkle their homes with holy water to protect themselves from unclean power. For the same purpose it is necessary to draw a cross in the house with chalk, soot, coal. The cross can also be made from rowan branches.
The holiday falls on harsh fasting, so Orthodox believers should exclude meat, fish and any food of animal origin from their diet. Also, you can not swear, evil and do any hard physical labor.
During this period, snakes are prepared for winter, so it is better not to walk in the forest – they can attack.
There were very important signs on this day, and random things became sacred.
September 14 – the last day of grandmother’s summer, so it was thought that autumn began to move towards winter.
We will remind, in August the Orthodox celebrated the day of the Prophet Samuel – one of the most famous biblical characters, who became famous for the wisdom and loyalty of God.
We will remind, Orthodox believers on August 19 in the new style honor the Holy Martyr Andrew Stratilat and 2,593 soldiers who died for Christ.
Also August 16 2025 in the world noted World Air Serpent Day, World Honey Bee Day and World Homeless Animal Day.
