Moscow must immediately cease attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and withdraw all its military and other personnel from the Zaporizhzhia NPP and the entire territory of Ukraine.
This is stated in the statement of the European Union, issued at the regular meeting of the Permanent Council of the OSCE in Vienna.
“Russia must immediately stop attacks on the energy infrastructure of Ukraine and withdraw all its military and unauthorized personnel from the ZNPP and the entire territory of Ukraine,” the statement said.
The European Union pointed out that due to Russian attacks on the Ukrainian energy infrastructure, the three operating nuclear power plants of Ukraine were forced to sharply reduce the production of electricity. “Russia’s military strikes on November 28 had an impact on substations used by all nuclear power plants to transmit and receive electricity, which is important for nuclear safety,” the EU added.
In addition, it was noted that Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine significantly increased the risk of a nuclear accident with potentially serious radiological consequences for human health and the environment, in particular for global food security in the event of contamination of agricultural land.
We will remind that the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant was again on the verge of blackout due to Russian shelling, which damaged one of the two power lines from the Ukrainian power system.
Such a situation at the ZNPP is far from the first. For example, in November, the ZNPP was on the verge of blackout three times due to shelling by the Russian Federation.
Meanwhile, Russia is trying to legalize the armed seizure and occupation of peaceful nuclear facilities in Ukraine. The aggressor country uses the instrument of international conventions for this.
Moscow threatened the IAEA with a ban on experts’ access to the Zaporizhzhya NPP.
