The European Commission on Wednesday approved a number of legislative proposals that will ensure continuous financial support for Ukraine during 2026 and 2027. The total amount of support will be 90 billion euros.
This is stated in the press release of the European Commission.
“We are all united by one clear goal – a just and lasting peace for Ukraine,” the representatives of the European Commission noted.
Funding involves two possible ways:
-
Borrowing funds on the EU capital markets;
-
A reparations loan program that will allow Ukraine to repay loans after receiving reparations while assets remain frozen.
“We have reached an agreement on ensuring the financial needs of Ukraine for the next two years,” the European Commission emphasized.
Support will be provided through enhanced cooperation backed by EU budgetary reserves, and all amendments will be made to the EU’s Multiannual Financial Plan.
In addition, the EU emphasized that funding after 2027 will be part of the next negotiations as part of the multiannual budget planning.
Other important issues were also discussed during the meetings:
-
The EU budget, which should be flexible and quickly formed to respond to crisis situations;
-
Geoeconomic issues, in particular the Mercosur agreement, which opens up new trade and economic opportunities for EU member states.
The European Commission noted the effectiveness of the Danish presidency, which in six months:
-
completed consideration of 41 cases,
-
received mandates for 17 negotiations,
-
provided unwavering support to Ukraine by adopting the 18th and 19th packages of sanctions,
-
achieved a quick freeze on Russian assets,
-
implemented progress in energy independence from Russia (REPowerEU),
-
advanced climate goals by 2040,
-
successfully launched the Migration and Asylum Pact,
-
strengthened Europe’s defense through EDIP and the Integrated Defense Plan,
-
and simplified regulatory issues for businesses.
“These achievements demonstrate leadership and commitment to the European project. We have laid a very solid foundation for future presidential terms,” the European Commission concluded.
We will remind you that this week the European Commission plans to give preliminary approval to the applications of the first group of EU countries to receive funds under the multibillion-dollar SAFE program for rearmament.
