In the draft report, the European Commission recognized Ukraine’s “outstanding commitment” to European integration, but noted that Kyiv needs to more actively implement reforms in the sphere of justice and strengthen the fight against corruption.

This is reported by Reuters.

As noted, the agency’s journalists got acquainted with the project of the document devoted to the assessment of Ukraine’s readiness for membership in the European Union. The report is expected to be adopted on Tuesday, November 4.

The document emphasizes that, despite the full-scale war, Ukraine has shown “clear commitment to the European integration course” and implemented a number of important reforms.

At the same time, the European Commission pointed out a number of challenges that remain unresolved. In particular, it is about reforms in the sphere of the rule of law and insufficient efforts in the fight against corruption.

Brussels expressed concern over “negative trends” in Ukraine — in particular, attempts to weaken the independence of anti-corruption institutions, political pressure on them, and threats to civil society.

The European Commission called on Kyiv to correct these shortcomings, because they can slow down the process of negotiations on joining the EU. It is proposed to pay special attention to reforming the judicial system, strengthening the fight against organized crime, and ensuring the transparency of state structures.

Although the majority of EU member state governments publicly support Ukraine’s accession, the report emphasizes that further progress will depend on the unanimous decision of all the bloc’s states.

At this moment, the official dates for the start of the next stage of negotiations have not been determined. At the same time, Hungary continues to block the enlargement process.

The Ukrainian authorities have stated that they aim to complete negotiations on joining the European Union by the end of 2028. However, the European Commission notes that in order to achieve this goal, Kyiv must speed up reforms in the areas of justice and the rule of law.

The draft report also suggested introducing stricter control mechanisms for candidate countries. This is necessary so that after accession they cannot deviate from the democratic principles and commitments made during the negotiations.

The leaders of the 26 member states of the European Union at the summit in Brussels on October 23-24 decided on Ukraine’s readiness to start negotiations on accession to three of the six clusters.

We will remind, Hungary again threatens to stop the supply of electricity to Ukraine.

Germany also reminded Hungary of its obligation to arrest Putin.
