Payments for the European Union loan for Ukraine may start as early as April. This was stated by European Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis, noting that the European Commission is actively cooperating with the European Parliament and the Council of the EU in order to approve as soon as possible the proposal for granting a loan to Ukraine for 2026-2027.

European Commissioner for Economic Affairs Valdis Dombrovskis announced this at a press conference in Brussels, Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“We are aware of Ukraine’s significant and urgent financing needs. That is why we aim to start payments in April. We are working with EU co-legislators to ensure the legislative process, which we hope will be completed in March, will allow payments to take place in April,” said the European Commissioner.

He noted that in parallel, the European Commission will work with the Ukrainian authorities to prepare a financial strategy for this year, so that all necessary steps can be taken in a timely manner.

Dombrovskis noted that in previous years, the EU worked with Ukraine under severe time pressure “and was able to fulfill its obligations.”

“The EU is now also cooperating with international partners that provide financial support to Ukraine, with the aim of securing their preliminary financial contribution as early as the 1st quarter of this year to cover the funding shortfall. “And this work is also progressing quite successfully,” said Dombrovskis.

When asked about the EU’s confidence that the G7 partners will cover the rest of Ukraine’s financial needs (€45 billion), the commissioner replied that the EU expects other partners to fulfill their role.

“Next year, the implementation of the ERA credit initiative will continue, and this year around 9.7 billion euros will be allocated under the initiative by other partners,” Dombrovskis said.

He added that Norway is also preparing a financial contribution for Ukraine, individual EU member states continue to support Ukraine on a bilateral basis, and international financial organizations also plan to contribute.

“The IMF is preparing a new program worth $8.1 billion,” the commissioner said, adding that the IMF’s work is in full swing.

The European Commission has approved financial support for Ukraine in the amount of 90 billion euros for two years.

We will remind, the European Commission is planning this week to give preliminary approval to the applications of the first group of EU countries to receive funds under the multibillion-dollar SAFE program for rearmament.
