The director of the Chernobyl NPP Serhii Tarakanov stated that the sarcophagus above the 4th power unit may collapse even without a direct hit to it, if a missile or a drone, in particular of the Iskander type, falls nearby.

This is reported by France24 with reference to Tarakanov.

He clarified that the complete restoration of the new safe confinement may take three to four years. After the previous attack, the sarcophagus lost some of its basic functions, but radiation levels remain stable and within normal limits.

The hole created by the drone’s impact has been closed with a protective screen, but about 300 smaller holes made during the firefighting operation still need to be closed.

The new safe confinement of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, damaged by a Russian drone in February 2025, will be restored by the end of 2026. Ukraine concluded a grant agreement with the EBRD, and the work will be performed by experts from the Novarka consortium.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine welcomed the adoption by the UN General Assembly of the resolution initiated by Ukraine on strengthening international cooperation to overcome the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster.
