Real January frosts have arrived in Ukraine, and according to the forecasts of the Ukrhydrometeorological center, the beginning of the week of January 12 and 13, 2026, will be one of the coldest periods of winter. The peak of cooling will fall on the northern and central regions, where the thermometers can drop to -20°C…-22°C . In addition to the significant drop in temperatures, forecasters are warning of icy roads in most areas, which will pose a danger to drivers and pedestrians.

The Ukrhydrometeorological Center writes about this.

On Monday, January 12, western regions and Vinnytsia will be affected by light snow, while no precipitation is expected in the rest of the territory. The temperature regime on this day will be heterogeneous: if in the north during the day it is forecast to -15°C then in the south and Transcarpathia the weather will be somewhat milder — from -2°C to -7°C . In the capital, Monday will pass without significant precipitation, with night temperatures close to -17°C…-19°C which forces energy and utility workers to work in an intensified mode to maintain heat in homes.

On Tuesday, January 13, the frost will only intensify, especially during the night hours, when the air in the northern regions can cool down to -22°C . In Zakarpattia and Prykarpattia during the day it is expected from -4°C to -9°C and in the southern regions the temperature will fluctuate within the limits -2°C…-7°C . Also, on Tuesday, fog is possible in the morning in most western and a number of central regions (Khersonsk, Zaporizhzhya, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava), which, in combination with ice, will significantly impair visibility on the roads.

In contrast to the warm January of last year, this winter is showing its severe character, approaching the temperature records of the middle of the last century. Forecasters remind that the lowest temperature on January 12 in Kyiv was recorded back in 1950 and was -26.9°C . Although the current readings will not surpass this new record, the combination of low temperatures and gusty northwesterly winds will make it feel even colder, so citizens are advised to avoid spending time outdoors.

On Sunday, January 11, Ukraine will be covered by a fresh cyclone with snow, rain and strong gusts of wind – especially in the south and east.
