The chairman of the Central Election Commission Oleg Didenko said that the commission is working on the creation of a new mechanism that will allow to participate in the voting of millions of Ukrainian citizens living abroad.
He reported this in an interview with “Ukrainian Truth”.
“It is clear that our 102 precincts that exist in the embassies and consulates cannot solve the problem. Therefore, we have created three groups to develop possible changes to the legislation. One of them concentrated to vote abroad. Various options have been considered, starting with electronic voting, postal vote, which we, as a CEC, do not support, especially for post -war elections. But everyone agreed on this option as creating additional polling stations outside the embassies and consulates. And this is related to the institute of so -called active registration, ”Didenko said.
The idea of active registration is that “our citizens can apply, physically at the Embassy or online for some time before the election process, that they are abroad and want to vote there and there,” he said.
“And on the basis of these statements and their additional information about the places of concentration of Ukrainians, our dipstrophops will be able to offer the Foreign Ministry and us to form additional polling stations,” the CEC chairman said.
Now the introduction of an active registration mechanism will depend on whether the Verkhovna Rada will support this proposal.
There are now millions of Ukrainian citizens abroad, and, according to consular accounting, there are less than 400 thousand.
Earlier, the adviser to the Presidential Office Mikhail Podolyak stated that Ukraine will not cancel martial law and hold elections in the event of a 30-day armistice at the front. It will not be the end of the war, but the situation – unpredictable.
And the special representative of US President Donald Trump from the Middle East Steve Vitcoff expressed the opinion that holding elections in Ukraine of a new head of state is a necessity.
