Ukrainian legislation forbids to run for presidents or deputies to persons who have been abroad for a long time.

Oleg Didenko, the chairman of the Central Election Commission, said this in an interview with Ukrainian Truth.

“As of now, persons who have left cannot run either in the presidential or parliamentary elections. Because in accordance with the Constitution and the Election Code, the fact of permanent residence in the territory of Ukraine for the last 5 or 10 years is required depending on the type of election, ”the CEC head said.

Exceptions are possible in the event of departure for study, treatment or business trip.

Answering the question whether the OP OP, for example, will be able to go to the polls, Didenko said: “Let’s move away from the names.”

Instead, he added that the territory of the embassy is considered part of Ukraine, and traveling abroad during martial law is not included in the list of exceptions.

“In 2022, the CEC proposed to solve this problem by introducing martial law as a basis that is not calculated in the term of continuous residence. This proposal, we hear, is still debated. Because someone raises the issue of justice, the issue of legality – the illegality of trips, the opportunity for women only to make this change, ”Didenko said.

He stressed that the final decision should be made by the Verkhovna Rada as this issue is political. Despite the adoption of the new election Code in 2019, the approach to continuous residence in the country remained unchanged.

“It may have been a little liberalization, but those categories that were excluded, they remained the main ones: business trips, training, treatment, vacation, possibly. And again, there are terms: 180 days during a year and 90 days a single departure. That is, if there are less than these terms, it is considered to be residence in Ukraine, ”he said.

Earlier, on March 31, the Ambassador of Ukraine to the UK and the former Commander -in -Chief of the Armed Forces Valery Zaluzhny commented on the media about potential participation in the upcoming elections in Ukraine.

According to him, “while the war is ongoing, it is necessary to work to preserve the country, not to think about the elections.”

We will remind, in the Central Election Commission of Ukraine declare that in order to hold the elections after the cancellation of martial law, the period of renewal of public infrastructure and time is required. They also emphasize a separate bill for elections after the war.

On March 30, the British edition of The Economist published material stated that President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy was preparing for the Presidential Elections in July 2025.
