The Orthodox Church of Ukraine has officially received the Assumption Cathedral in Kanev, Metropolitan Epiphanius has already held the first venerable prayer there.

This was announced by the Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications Mykola Tochitsky.

The head of the Ministry of Culture called the event a historical step. “The temple, where two days the Ukrainian community said goodbye to Taras Shevchenko 164 years ago, is finally in the spiritual space of Ukraine, freeing himself from the parasitizing of Moscow churchmen,” he wrote.

Tochitsky stressed that the purification of Ukrainian shrines from the influence of structures related to Russia is a state priority. In this context, the official also commented on the dismissal of the Director General of the National Reserve “Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra”, pointing to his weak position in the implementation of the law.

St. George (Assumption) Cathedral of the XII century. (built in 1144) was founded by the Prince of Chernihiv Vsevolod Olgovich. During the Mongol invasion in 1239 the cathedral was injured, but was not destroyed. In May 1861, Taras Shevchenko sang in the cathedral. He was recognized as a monument of archeology of republican importance and was under special protection of the state for a long time. However, contrary to the requirements of the Law, as well as the direct prohibition on the archeology monument in any form other than the state, without the approval of the alienation of the monument of national importance, the executive committee of the Kaniv City Council in 2003 granted the UOC-MP permission to register the ownership of the cathedral.

Earlier, the Smilyansk District Prosecutor’s Office went to court to return to the state of the Uspensky Cathedral in Kanev. Monument of the XII century. illegally transferred to the property of the UOC -MP.
