The British company BAE Systems will open an artillery factory as part of supporting Ukrainian forces in the fight against Russia. M777 howitzers will be produced there in 2025. This was reported by The Telegraph on November 15.

As the publication noted, this effectively cancels the company’s decision to curtail artillery production in Great Britain. The Telegraph claims that Ukraine has already received guns from the US, Canada and Australia, but many of them need to be upgraded or repaired. Because of this, BAE received multimillion-dollar contracts for the production of spare parts for the M777 from the United States.

The company said on November 15 that the new plant in the UK “will support the government’s ambitions to restore the country’s vital artillery capabilities”.

BAE’s UK head of weapons systems, John Borto, said their aim is to “provide a long-term artillery capability for the UK that will protect, support and develop critical specialist UK industrial capabilities, as well as provide important export opportunities”.

The company also entered into agreements with the British government to replenish the country’s stockpile of ammunition, including the 155 mm rounds used in the M777 howitzers. BAE previously said eight unnamed countries had expressed interest in placing new orders for the M777.

In August 2023, it was reported that Ukraine had agreed to cooperate with BAE Systems — the company was to open its representative office here. In particular, at that time it was about the production of light guns L119.
